New London - It is not often that you find live entertainment in a coffee shop in the middle of the afternoon on a Tuesday, but I am glad that I did.

Busy night on the photo desk

Friday Jan. 25, 2008

New London - Working the photo desk means staring at a computer from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. the following morning. Tonight however I took a night scene from The Day's roof and then went to a double shooting around 11:00 p.m. Both victims were taken to the hospital and their injuries do not sound life threatening, though one was flown to New Haven after being shot multiple times. I will not go into detail as to where he was shot, but lets just say he will have a hard time sitting down for a while. Needless to say it has a been a crazy night. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Foxwoods Casino - I had to photograph a local boxer who is making his professional debut tomorrow night. Today was the weigh-in, and after getting the standard pose and flex shots I decided to hang out with him back stage waiting for his physical. Even though the exposure was a beast in this shot, I like the look of intensity in his eyes. Of course when he fights tomorrow night, I will be working desk shift.

Ode to my Grandfather

Wednesday Jan. 23, 2008
Mystic - No this is not my Grandfather. Its not even the right state. However my Grandad was (amongst other things) a barber in Beverly Mass. many years ago. It did not hit me until I got back to the office, that somewhere he was watching me feature hunt in an old school barber shop, and it probably brought a smile to his face.

Hartford - I started today off at the State House working the special session on criminal justice reform. It was a real barn burner. Anyhow, I used to fear going to the State House. I was always worried that I was in the way, or standing somewhere I should not be. That has been replaced by an almost joy of getting the assignment. It is a privilege to be on the floor, sometimes just inches away from the senators and reps at work. Mind you I am working at the time to. This shot is of one of our local senators.

Local Senators standing on the business side of the brass rail.

New London - Ah, but no day is complete with out the hunt for the elusive feature photo. Even after spending the morning in Hartford, I still had to track some art for the Region section down. The editor even exclaimed "Oh Sweet!" over this one, which is often NOT said of a child sitting at a computer in a public library. I guess I was just in a playful mood, either that or we were REALLY desperate.

New London - A New London youth is video taped for the Connecticut CHIP (Child Identification Program) at a local event in New London. The CHIP program records the child's name, age, address, still photos and video, finger prints, teeth imprints and DNA.

Groton - I finished my assignments by 10:30 a.m. and spent the remainder feature hunting. Considering that it has been far too warm for ice, I found skating indoors. The only problem here is that I did not get the name of the girl on the right, so I had to submit a different shot.

HOOPS!

Friday Jan. 18, 2008
Montville - It was a good night for basketball. Last night, I could not get a shot in focus, or one with the ball in it, but I'm feeling much better now.

A view from on high

Norwich - A Reception of the body ceremony for the Most Reverend Daniel Hart, Bishop Emeritus of Norwich at the Cathedral of St. Patrick. The organist was surprised to find himself surrounded by so many photographers.

East Lyme - You know it is a slow news day when...

Behind the scenes

Wednesday Jan. 9, 2008

Groton City - Ken's Tackle Shop in Groton burned to the ground. I was not the first due photographer to the scene, but me being me, I could not stay away. This was great however, because there was no pressure to perform. I got to walk around and find some behind the scenes sort of photos, instead of rushing straight in to get the action before being chased away by the police.

The smoke was really thick throughout the area, causing residents to cover up in an attempt to breathe.

Oh well...

Groton - I caught this hockey player at sunset during a last minute feature hunt. The problem is that one of our other photogs photographed this same person about three weeks ago. Of course the subject did not tell me this. It was brought to the editors attention, and well, so much for this one.

Off and running

Wednesday Jan. 2, 2008

Mohegan Sun - This is a photo that I took at a "topping off" ceremony for Mohegan Sun's new casino expansion project. I figured that this is a fun way to cover a faily traditional assignment. For those who are unsure what a topping off ceremony is, the beam at the top of the photo was the last to be added to the superstructure of the new facility. Everyone signs it, they hang flags from it, it is a pretty big deal for the builders.

Photos of the Year 2007

I decided to showcase The Day's web producer Peter Huoppi's work for once. This photo is a link to our "best of" web gallery. Enjoy.
